thanks for your answers. i still don't really understand what kind of sequence of alphabeta calls would lead to some benefit of having both upper and lower bounds though. i understand your answers, because they sound right, and i thought the same, but i cannot construct an example for myself which shows me how storing both bounds will help me. i guess i'll just have to try with both bounds :-) cheers martin
