I've fiddled a bit with GCC.

I tried the Pentium version of GCC, but this was no help, most of the benefits
have been folded back into the latest release version of GCC, most of the
resultant code was actually slower.

The compiler definitely lags behind Intel and MS in coding for specific x86
processors - but I guess we are stuck with that till more chip makers push money
and effort at GCC. Nice to see active work on the IA processors and GCC, but if
these chips do take off we'll be more dependent on good compilers.

That said the compiler changes were never more than a few percentage points of
performance, and gnuchess has ample room still to improve before I worry too
much about the last few percentage points.
