Hi Bob: The clue has a name: identification. Identification with anything powerful. It is the reason why people gather around leaders. In this case, people make of a program a proyection of himself and so its wins become "his" wins. It is the same mechanism behind an idiot that runs his car at toop speed endangering anybody using the way: he is not anymore just an humble guy, but part of the powerful team he has became with the car.
