GAME 4 Comments by Jan van Reek Game 4 has started on Tuesday January 9 at 1 p.m. John van der Wiel - Rebel 11 1. c4 c5 2. g3 Nf6 3. Bg2 d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5 So far the opening is a quiet English variation. 5. Nc3 Nc7 6. Qa4+ Bd7 This leads to the positional sacrifice of a pawn. 7. Qb3 Bc6 8. Bxc6+ Nxc6 9. Qxb7 Nd4 A great tactical fight has started. 10. Nf3! Rb8! Rebel wisely avoids the luring trap 10. .. Nc2? 11. Kd1 Nxa1 12. Ne5! e6 13. Qc6+ Ke7 14. Qxc5+ Ke8 15. Qc6+ Ke7 16. b3! White has a great positional advantage and sufficient material compensation. 11. Qe4 f5 12. Qd3 g6 13. 0-0 Bg7 14. Qc4!? The consequent 14. b3?! e5 15. Qc4 e4 would give Black a strong initiative. 14. .. Nxf3+ 15. exf3 Qd4 16. Qa4+?! The more solid 16. d3 keeps the equality. 16. .. Qxa4 17. Nxa4 Ne6 18. Rb1 c4! The isolated c-pawn has become strong. 19. b3!? White plays an active move. Otherwise the restriction will become unpleasant. Rebel refuses the offer of a draw. 19. .. cxb3 20. Rxb3 Rxb3 21. axb3 Kf7 22. Bb2 Bxb2 23. Nxb2 Nd4 Black regains the pawn in an active position. 24. Ra1! White sacrifices a pawn for a positional advantage on the queen's side. 24. .. Nxf3+ 25. Kg2 Nxd2 26. b4 Rb8 29. Nd3 Rb7 30. Ra6 The White rook restricts Black's mobility. 30. .. Nc4 31. h4? In cooperation with Minze bij de Weg, I analysed the exchanges 31. Rc6! Rd7 32. Rxc4 Rxd3 33. Rc7 Rb3 34. Rxa7 Rxb4 35. h4! and a theoretical draw. 31. .. e5 32. Rd4 Ke6 33. Kf2 d2 34. Ke2 Rd7! The pawn ending offers excellent winning chances. 35. Rxd7 Kxd7 36. Kxd2 Kd6 37. Kc3 Kd5 38. f3 h6 White lacks one tempo. 39. Kb3!? The point is 39. Kd3 g5! 40. h5 g4! 41. f4 a6 and zugzwang decides the game. 39. .. Kd4 40. Ka4 Ke3 41. f4 Kf3 42. Ka5 Kxg3 43. Ka6 Kxh4 44. Kxa7 g5 45. fxg5 hxg5 46. b5 g4 0-1 The g-pawn promotes with check. Queens are exchanged and the last Black pawn decides the game.
