Using ponder does seem to allow the WinBoard engine in question some compensation as far as I can tell. At least every time it gets a ponder hit, otherwise not. I think you're doing the right thing by using the Chesspartner GUI instead. It appears to have implemented the correct protocol. In my test of this GUI I ignored going into details with the protocol compatability question, even though I checked installation and gameplay with and without ponder. Mainly because I'm no expert and also due to the fact that the GUI didn't allow interesting options not already available in WinBoard. But with the appearance of the ERT tool that is about to change, which makes correct protocol implementation significant. Mogens.
