Read "Winning Chess Tactics" by Yasser Seirawan Once you have read that book, one glance will tell you what is wrong. All of his books are really good. He is the only chess author I have read and really loved since I was a boy and read "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess." His explanations are crystal clear. I have a dream of writing an evaluation function that has one term for everything he mentions in all of his books. It would take ten seconds for the first ply, but I don't think it would ever miss if I programmed it right!
