My guess is that the native interface between the Chessbase GUI and engines works something like that -- someone decided that the engine should be stateless between moves, so the GUI sends it the complete game state and tells it when to start and stop thinking. What surprised me was when I heard that others were doing the same thing, not just Chessbase, and that Stefan Meyer-Kahlen's new UCI protocol was designed in this style. It sure seems awkward to me. --Tim
