You are right. Ed and I used a special book for Van der Wiel, concentrating on
the lines we expected him to play. This worked better for Rebel playing Black (I
expected all his opening moves, 1.c3 1.c4 and 1.d4 followed by 2.c3), than with
White!

Still, it is enormously difficult to avoid certain types of position. After 1.c3
it became an exchange Slav, which is not an anti computer style opening. After
1.c4 my line of 1 ... c5, 2 ... Nf6 3 ... d5 also avoided slow English lines as
Van der Wiel used to play in AEGON. But with 1.d4 and 2.c3 he got an attacking
position anyway, although the Kramnik-Junior disaster was avoided.

All in all I am quite happy with the openings in this match.

Jeroen
