The problem is, that Microsoft has made it more difficult to start into Real DOS
mode. You should try to

1. make a start disk (only possible via system settings/software in Win ME)*
2. use it to start, and press SHIFT-F5 when the DOS menu appears

You may have to change the boot sequence in order to use the start disk.

I'm not sure that you can suppress himem.sys (or whatever XMS driver Win ME uses
now), which would AFAIK be neccessary to have Hiarcs 7 DOS allocating large hash
tables. I assume you know that you must use the parameter -x when starting
Hiarcs (or /x, I don't know it exactly at the moment).

I have successfully tested the Windows ME start disk to go into Real DOS,
together with Mchess Pro 7.01 only - but this cooperates with himem.sys, so I
can't comment about Hiarcs 7 DOS.

Good luck - please tell us about the results, if you try this method.

*) It isn't possible to create an empty boot disk anymore, with Windows ME.
