Every hit is basically free. Maintaining good data locality for better cache hit rates will become even more important in a few years. Several companies have announced pland for 1000 Mhz microprocessors in 2000 or 2001. But memory DRAM is not getting much faster. So the penalty for a cache miss, expressed in processor cycles, will get much larger than it is today. Expect system early next century to waste more than 100 instruction times on each cache miss. Also expect the cache line size to increase, so more data is brought in with each miss. David Fotland
