Subject: Using auto player with two PCs

I want to play matches using two PCs. This is the first time I've used auto
player and the online help included with my chess software isn't very extensive.

i) When people talk about a serial cable, they sometimes also refer to it as a
"null modem" cable. I presume they as referring to a cable that plugs into the
9 pin port and not a cable that connects two modems?

ii) My initial test involved trying to get Junior 6 to play on both PCs. I
told both to connect hardware on COM 1. (I don't know how to guarantee what is
COM 1 or 2 on the back of my PC so I've been trying both, but always matching
across PCs since they are identical models.) I then set up a new match on the
first PC, specifying this as being the slave. When I then try to do the same on
the other as the master I get an error stating that the endgame tablebases are
not installed? Is this requirement? If it is, it comes as a surprise to me. I
tried installing some endagame tablebases but it didn't help. I've also tried
setting up the master first. Any suggestions?

iii) I then tried setting up a match between two versions of Shredder 5. This
time I just get a communication error. So it definitely seems I've done
something wrong.

iii) I have the following programs: Fritz6, Junior6, Shredder5, Rebel Century
3, Gambit Tiger, Chess Tiger, CM8000. Are there any of these that I won't be
able to use with auto player?

iv) Are there any good references for auto player?

Thanks in advance for any help
Gordon
