What v/d Wiel did or did not see is really not relevant. He seems to have 'rolled the dice' in choosing the pawn endgame, i.e. choosing a forced vaiation (he must have guessed the engame was lost) and hoping for the best. And the pawn endgame lost, may I say, much faster than the rook endgame would have, keeping the rooks on board would have been much better and given black more opportunities to err.
