Which would you rather read: This -- a7a6 b5e2 c7c5 d4c5 b6c5 e1g1 d8b6 c1c2 f8e8 f1d1 or this -- Ne2 Rc8 Bxb7 a5 Bxc8 Kxc8 Nd2 Rg8 O-O-O c6 Rde1 Be6 For me, it's no contest. The Winboard protocol (old format) allows bazillions of move notations. This is what Phalanx will give: Nc8-e7 Rf1-e1 Ra8-b8 Ra1-c1 Pb7-b6 Nc3-a4 Pb6xc5 Na4xc5 Qd8-d6 Nc5xe6 This is what Comet will give: f1d1 d8d7 e2d3 f8d8 d1e1 d5d6 a3d6 And the new crafty: Bd7 h3 Be8 Qd2 b5 Qf4 b4 Nd1 e6 There are a bunch of others that are supported also. Winboard just added another one to its already large list of acceptable formats. The most readable format is the new one. Rather than be critical because someone is using the standard move notation that we all know and love, I think we should praise them. I suspect that it will be trivial for chess programs to adopt the new notation. After all, it is the one that they have already been using for years.
