Thanks Michael, but.....

I uninstalled & started again,
Things I did DIFFERENTLY this time:

1. Installed where CM wanted to c:\prog.... (instead of D:\games...)
2. Did the Typical Install (instead of Min)
3. Completed the online Registration (instead of being unable to log
on)(interestingly despite my uninstall CM remembered my input in my previous
aborted registration attempt)
4. Restarted Windows before running CM (instead of starting CM immediatly)

STILL:
at infinite level the King analyses 1024 positions, almost completing depth 3.
