No, it's no secret at all. Mr. Eugene Nalimov has made Endgame Tablebases,
and a lot of programmers use that in their programs to play the endgame
better. They are databases of all possible positions of 3, 4, 5 and even
6 pieces on the chessboard. And for each position the databases say
whether it's a draw or a mate, and even mate in how many moves!
