I only tried last summer some old Radio Shack stand alone unit and had no problem (played only 2 games). It may have not been the right size gap from the top programs to that unit to reproduce your result. When on psychological curiosities in playing against programs, I have noticed that I play much better against the programs when I turn off any status display and its score display. I think my brain gets lazy when I can see its lines. Not knowing what is coming next helps keep me on the edge, even a devastating tactical shot from the program in that case is enjoyable (sort of). Both these effects, yours and mine, are similar to the commonly noted effect in human play -- if you play a weak player you don't play your best. I recall from my club playing years that during informal blitz matches among friends, some players would come to the table and from the first move start an exaggerated whine on how tired or sick they felt, how they can't think at all. Even though the other guy had seen it all before and knew consciously what that was about, the psychology would still somehow work.
