Is the conversion in the >middle of the search (or does it happen only at the biginning) worth it? Just one of the approaches I am trying. Also, I try changing only at search call time or also at any point where the board is sparse enough. Not really sure what works the best yet,and I have a lot of approaches and profile sessions to go before I get a good idea. I got the notion because I saw big advantages for one technique or the other for different board conditions. Another advantage is that you can use partial bitboard info also, without having to complete it. My "base" format has one 64 bit integer with the positions on it, then a list of the pieces that are represented by the bits in order.
