That's the way I've learned it also, I have a couple of Petzolds on my shelf :)
While I agree that it's a possibility, I don't think it's the best way nowadays.

However, it *is* good after you've learned to program Windows using MFC or VCL
to look at it sometime, so you know what exactly is going on behind the scenes!
