Hi David,

I think I can help as I've been playing the Italian for some time now.
As I recall from Estrin's book (I don't have it anymore), he advocated
8.e5! with a funny game continuation that went 8...Ne4 9.0-0 Nxc3?
10.bxc3 Bxc3 (a classic no-no in this opening) 11.Ng5! Bxa1 12.Qh5 h6
13.Nxf7 Rxf7 14.Qxf7+ Kh8 (Kh7 leads to the same thing) 15.Bg5!!. Still,
Black doesn't have to be quite so greedy nor so dumb and can try
9...Bxc3?! which gives up the Bishop pair, 10.bxc3 d5!? (10...Nxc3?
11.Qc2! b5 12.Ng5 g6 13.Bxf7 Rxf7 14.Nxf7 and 15.Qxc3) 11.exd6 Qxd6
(11...Nxd6 12.Bg5 should be good) 12.Re1 Nf6 (12...Bf5 13.Qc2 and Black
is going to have some real problems to cope with here. Ex.13...Rae8
14.Bd3 Qg6 15.Ba3 or 13...Rfe8 14.Bd3 Qg6 14.Bf4 is good for White and
if 12...Nxc3? 13.Qb3 threatening 14.Ba3) and here 13.Qa4 looks strong,
threatening 14.Ba3. In any case 7...0-0 is by far one of Black's weaker
responses and should be cause for no worry. Hope this helps.
