you're right in principle, but not for checkers :-)
chinook was designed to beat tinsley, not number 2 who became number 1. tinsley
was world champion for about 50 years! - except when he stopped playing for some
years, only to come back and beat everybody again. he was so much better than
all other humans and had this unbelievable record that schaeffer wanted to beat
tinsley, not the world champion after him. tinsley was lightyears ahead of
everybody else. remember when bobby fisher disposed of his opponents with 6-0?
even though they were also very strong grandmasters, would you be happy if your
machine went on to beat them?
actually tinsley was no longer 'world champion' when he played against chinook,
he forfeited his title to play against chinook, as the official federation didnt
want him to play chinook for the world championship, he was merely the clear
number one in the world.
read schaeffer's book - you will see what i mean in the chapter where schaeffer
describes his emotions after tinsely's death.
