The ultimate free system consists of this: 1. SCID by Shane Hudson. It requires that you install TCL/TK. I doubt that most users can do this. If you are not the technical sort, don't even try it. 2. Chess engines: A. Crafty B. Little Goliath C. Yace D. AnMon E. Amy F. SOS G. Bringer H. The Crazy Bishop I. Comet J. Gromit K. Francesca (and whatever else you would like to add). 3. Chess data can be obtained from a lot of places like UPITT or my FTP site. You would need that for item #1 to be useful. Now, what is wrong with this ulitimate (free) solution? 1. The database is not nearly so full featured as a commercial product like Chess Assistant or ChessBase. 2. The engines are not quite as strong as something like Chess Tiger, Shredder or Hiarcs. 3. The chess data is the worst part. The data from freely available sources is unfathomably lame compared to a commercial collection, hand cleaned by a dedicated team of professionals. Serious chess players should buy a package. I have bought some [and also got a few free ;-)] and yet I also retain a great fondness for all of the free stuff. So they are not mutually exclusive.
