Why do not you all try chinese chess (xiangqi)? This is 9x10 board and very
similar to chess (the most different thing is cannon pieces which kind of
capture - jump over another piece). I am not chinese but I learn easily and have
more fun to play it than chess (one game is usually quicker and litle easier). I
know that you may feel difficult when see pieces of chinese characters - but
actually they are simple and not difficult to recognise. I am sure there are
much more players of that game than chess ones.
