This is an interesting question. Many chess players are really nuts, but many
are not. Some GMs are nuts. In my opinion Fischer became nuts. Mecking is on the
way now. Lembit Oll was another one...

I know many peolple who are computer programers and nuts.

I know many common chess players who are nuts (and some are strong chess
players). You can often find them at my local chess club.

Some years ago I realised that I needed a computer to get better at chess. I was
16 years old and about 2000 ELO, had no money to pay a chess trainer and had
not much time to spend reading chess books, as I wanted to become a doctor. Many
years later I got my first chess program (Sargon III). In remember I used to
play blindfold chess at the University (hehehe - playing games at the
University's laboratory was forbidden, so I used to turn off the monitor and
just adjust Sargon to pint the moves. It was really fun!). Many years later I
got my first PC at home - a 286 - and used to play Sargon a lot. I bought Sargon
V and became really addicted to it.

I graduated and started my specialty training in Neurology (I don't really like
Psychiatry). Since 1996 I'm a Clinical Neurologist. At my office I see many many
crazy people who go ask a Neurologist about their thoughts. All I can tell you
is that I've never seen not even one chess player at my office. Never.

I also have many friends who are very intelligent people and good chess players.
Many of them are lawyers or engineers, and none of them are nuts.

As I'm the only one at my local chess club who collects chess programs and do
engine-engine matches, maybe some people here think I am nuts... hehehe. All
that I can tell you is that I have improved my chess after I started to use
computer chess programs. I use them for analysis (but I don't like
correspondence chess because of that). I also use the Fritz 3D board to enter
the games from the books. This really helped me a lot. I hated to use small
boards (I have a big wooden board with beautiful pieces at home, but they are so
heavy my arm gets aching after a few hours of training), so this is the best way
I use the programs. My favorite ones are Fritz and Genius 6,5 (beautiful 3D
chess sets!!).
I also like the 2D sets of ChessPartner/Tiger (waiting for new 3D sets!).

Nuts? No, I don't think I am nuts. Chess is for fun now. Computer chess is going
to change Chess forever. That's why I'm addicted to it. (yes, there are people
who are addicted to cigarettes, or alcohol, or drugs, but that can kill. Fischer
is nuts but at least he is alive!).

Don't you think F1 or F-Indy racers are nuts? Driving a car at 300 Km/hour,
isn't that crazy? What about boxing? What about bungee-jumping?

I prefer chess and computer-chess. They are much safer and funny.
