The only way that I know of (and I'm not sure that it is 100% accurate), is to check the date and filesize of the Chessmaster.EXE. The US version has the following: Date = 10/18/2000 Size = 1,589,248 bytes The UK/European version has the following: Date = 10/23/2000 Size = 1,589,273 bytes So far, three users from three countries (Germany, Sweden and Denmark) have each mailed me identical copies of the EXE, so it appears that this was just a slight modification done in Europe without the US development team being made aware of it. So, if you DO have what appears to be the US version, then go ahead and apply the patch. Then, check for a file called PATCH.ERR in the Chessmaster 8000 directory. If there isn't one, then you're OK. If there IS one, then you will have to uninstall and reinstall. jm
