I received an e-mail this morning from "Nonie Mousse" who informed me he has posted and "anti-CD" patch at http://nonyz.tripod.com , which when installed removes the requirement for inserting the CD, even after the official CM8000 patch is installed. I have downloaded his patch although haven't installed it yet. Nonie says he has posted other patches like this, that they have worked and do not contain viruses, and that he is well known on various chess usenet groups. Sounds legit and well-meaning to me, but not being a very frequent visitor to such groups I don't have a way to evaluate it. He requested that any questions or comments about his patch be posted here rather than in a private e-mail. John M, I know that you received the same note from him, although you are obviously unable to publicize this unofficial "fix." Nonie, whoever you are, thank you for your efforts to fix the short-sighted behavior of the CM developers. Sorry to question your intentions, but if you are a software developer yourself, I'm sure you appreciate that your note might raise questions in someone who doesn't know you. I'd love to use your patch if it does the job, but can anyone else reading this vouch for Nonnie on this? In any case, I agree with Scott: someone in the marketing/legal department needs to get a better fix on reality! And I echo others who express gratitude to John M. for being the immediate target of a lot of griping about things for which he has no authority to change. thanks, Marc On February 12, 2001 at 18:33:50, Scott Woods wrote: >Thanks for the quick reply John.
