Hi William:
I experienced the same problem. I e-mailed chessmaster and got the response
below from them. It works ok with the patch...only if the custom board is NOT
selected. Here is the e-mail they sent back:

Found and fixed. Because of the snafu with the patch, there is going to be a new
US version of the patch released at the same time as the European version, and
both of them will be v1.0.2. Therefore, this bug fix will be in that patch.
Hopefully, it will be released in a couple of weeks. Until then, just stay away
from the Custom Board and everything should be fine.

Sorry about that,

cm

Subject: bug in chessmaster 8000 patch

>>>Dear Sir or Madam:
I wanted to make you aware of what I believe to be a bug.

Situation: I installed cm 8000, and downloaded the patch. I installed the patch
and ran it. Everything went well. Then I went through and made a "custom" board
for each room (classroom, gameroom, and library). The custom board was enlarged
and green/off white with figurine pieces.
After changing each room, and saving the layouts, everytime I clicked on a room
that I had already "changed" it would crash. It seems there was a problem
somewhere with being able to load the new layouts.

To fix it: I unistalled cm 8000 and deleted the folder left behind. Then I
reinstalled it. Next I changed each rooms configuration to how I wanted it (with
custom board and figurine pieces). This time I DID NOT apply the patch. I had
no problems opening the rooms with the new configurations now. Next I copied
the chessmaster.exe file to a save place. Then I applied the patch. When I
attempted to open the program it opened the "custom" board, but it looked like
it was "smeared" taking up the whole screen. (It didn't crash each time like it
did the first time, but was totally unusuable). I then copied the
chessmaster.exe file that had not been patched back into the cm 8000 folder. It
worked fine.
---The problem only appears after the patch is applied (yes I have the american
editon of cm 8000).
---The problem only affects it seems the "custom" board. When I use one of the
"premade" boards included (Large 2d maple board with figurine piece set) it
works fine.
---The problem appeared using both a typical install and a full install

My System info:
Gateway 433 mz celeron proc.
128 megs ram
16 megs Voodoo 3 3000 card
Windows 2000 Pro. sp1

I would like to say thankyou very much for fixing the other bugs, especially the
Openings practice bug. You guys/gals do great work. I love Chessmaster. Take
care. If I can be of any further help just let me know. Sincerely Matthew<<<<<<<
