(CM8000 patch - revisited)

After getting over my earlier frustrations, somewhat...

I reinstalled CM8000 clean then reapplied the cm8k101.exe patch. I am now
generally able to get the Game Room windows and engines to work properly under
infinite time control. The speed of analysis in the Thinking Lines window is now
correct (same as the unpatched version).

The only difference which I can recall is that I did a Typical installation this
time. Previously I did a Custom installation and left out the Tutorials, etc.

Also this time, before installing the patch I started CM and took some
prophylactic measures. I went to the Game Room and made sure that the custom
chessboard would not open automatically from my prior defined layouts. I loaded
a default CM layout. I also set up a human vs human game. Also I turned off the
Thinking Lines and Visual Thinking windows. A test restart of CM8000 and going
to the Game Room showed no king engines running at that point, so then I applied
the patch.

Nevertheless, there are still some problems when using a user-defined
personality -- one which I have defined (not one of the built-in personalities).
Sometimes the number of king engines gets stuck, and it's impossible to turn off
all engines without quitting then reloading CM. I expect that I can probably
work around that problem and avoid it, although I'm not exactly sure what causes
it yet.

Also in one instance while using a user-defined personality with the White box
checked in the Thinking Lines window... I tried to uncheck the White box and
IT IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF MY COMPUTER!? It wasn't like an ordinary
windows shutdown. The computer just turned off instantly. That indicates a more
serious system problem of some kind. I don't know much about the technicals
involved, but would guess that video drivers or a DirectX problem is indicated.

In summary, it looks like I'll probably be able to use the patched CM8000 after
all -- if I can learn how to sidestep the problems which remain when using
user-defined personalities.

The improvements in the Game Room windows are nice. However there is no gentle
way to put it... It is a royal pain in the ass to have the CD in the drive all
the time. For one reason my CD drive has a 15-20 second spin-up delay, which
slows down whatever I'm doing. I generally want/need to multitask CM with other
software, but that's not very easy with the CD requirement.
