Subject: CM8000 Patch Snafu Update

Author: John Merlino

Date: 13:07:48 02/15/01

Here's everything that I know:

-- The CD master for the European version that was sent from our US office to
our European office produced an identical EXE to the one on the US version. In
other words, the only difference SHOULD have been at the end of the ReadMe file,
which gave European Technical and Customer Support addresses and phone numbers.
So, somebody in Europe changed the EXE without telling the US office, which
meant the development team was never told. This is why a patch was released that
doesn't work on the European version.

-- The patch DOES break the custom board. There are also two newly reported bugs
(both were in v1.0.0). One is a very obscure crash when doing a Data Query in
the Database room. The other is a minor tutorial fix. There are no other
CONFIRMED new problems reported that were caused by the 1.0.1 patch. The
problems that William Penn was experiencing have not been duplicated, but some
further investigation is still warranted to try to determine what could have
caused them. One other user (can't remember who) reported that the White and
Black radio buttons in the Visual Thinking dialog did not work properly, but no
actual details on how to make them not work have yet been received.

-- Therefore, since there are new bugs to fix, there will be a new US patch that
will be released at the same time as the European patch. BOTH of these patches
will be v1.0.2, to avoid confusion. The will both produce an identical EXE, but
two patches are required as the patch needs to know the original file contents,
so it can do a "difference" or "delta" patch.

-- The time frame for the release of the 1.0.2 patches is still up in the air,
unfortunately, because the development team needs an actual master from the
European offices to ensure that it has the proper files that the European users
are getting on their machines. Hopefully, this master set will arrive in our
offices today or tomorrow, but it may not be for several days, depending on what
sort of priority they decide to give it. Once the master is received, both
patches will be created, and the testing process will start. This will probably
take about one week.

-- Therefore, I would venture to guess that the 1.0.2 patches will not be
released until AT LEAST February 26th, and perhaps not for a week after that, or
even more.

Once again, we apologize for all of the confusion,

jm
