Games from 1500 to 1950 are found here in PGN and SCID format.  The games are
compressed with bzip2 (and the binary to compress/decompress is found in the
same location):

Compressed PGN:

Compressed SCID:
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/Scid/hist.sg.bz2
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/Scid/hist.si.bz2
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/Scid/hist.sn.bz2

Compression/Decompression program:
ftp://cap.connx.com/pub/Scid/bzip2.exe

To decompress a file, do it like this:

bzip2 -d hist.pgn.bz2

When the program bzip2 finishes, the file hist.pgn will be expanded in place and
the file hist.pgn.bz2 will be gone.
