I posted the same message on r.g.c.c, but received no response there: I'm sure that this is a naive question, but I would be grateful if someone would answer anyway. Now, it seems to me that humans play almost exactly the opposite of computers. At least I do. First I look for a goal that might be approachable. Can I capture the queen? Can I form a forced mate? Can I get a knight fork on something of value? Then I work backwards from the situation I want to achieve to see how I can arrive at it. Computers just ram forward and see when they stumble on something nice. Has anyone tried programming chess from the goal backwards?
