Subject: Difficult but not impossible position.

Author: Eelco de Groot

Date: 07:59:53 02/22/01

Hi people,

This is one for the test-suites. Difficult but not impossible I think. Young
Vladimir Kramnik writes in the latest issue of New In Chess magazine 2001 Nr.1
an extensive report of his Brain Games match against Gary Kasparov. It's not a
cheap magazine but if you want first hand analysis and insights of the Champ
himself... This is just one position of game three I used for tinkering with Q5T
personality, to find some settings that work well in Century 3.0. Maybe there
are programs (Betas?) that find 39.Bd2-c3! much faster?

Kramnik writes about this:

"39.Re7?! This moment was missed by many of the commentators. Of course, to find
39.Bc3! in time trouble and to calculate the subsequent raid by the king was not
easy. Black's position is very unpleasant: 39. ..Rxf2 40.Kxf2 (40.Bxe5 R2xf6
41.Rxc7 Kd8 42.Rxc4 Re6=) 40. ..Rxf6 41.Ke3 Re6 42.Kd4!+- {This move the
computer doesn't yet find in its PV for 39.Bc3 by the way. Eelco} (weaker is
42.Ke4 Nd3 43.Kd5 Nf4 44.Kc4 Re2 with a draw) {this is the line computer
chooses, see log Q5T3W5 and Q5T}. Now however a draw is arrived at by force."

This is the output of some variant settings of Q5T for Century 3.0, [Q3 but
ATTRACTIVENESS = 250, CHESS KNOWLEDGE = 130, MOBILITY = 50, SELECTIVE SEARCH =
120.]

Well don't pin me down on this, it's just the very first position I tried out
with these settings...

Thinking....

This is the output from Q5T Experimental in Century 2.0, [Q3 but ATTRACTIVENES =
250, MOBILITY = 45 (original MOBILITY = 40 also works well) SELECTIVE SEARCH =
120 (exactly the same, in Century 2.0 and Century 3.0, as original 140 though)],
it also plays 39.Bc3 but only after a pretty long search. Before that it prefers
Kasparov's 39.Rg7-e7 over 39.Bd2-f4 that the experimental Q5T3W5 wants to play.
Notice that in its last line with 39.Re7, where the eval of Q5T for 39.Re7 goes
down to -1.00, it plays 40. ..Kb7 where Kramnik played 40. ..Nxf2 in the game.
In his analysis he mentions that by then he had only some 15 seconds left on the
clock for this last move before the timecontrol. He doesn't mention any other
moves here or if there is something better than 40. ..Nxf2
