It would be interesting to finally know the truth about this match.  I have read
three different versions:
1.  Schlecter declined to go for the draw by repetition because, as is well
known, he was so good-natured that he did feel it would be honorable for him to
win the match this way.
2.  Schlecter did not see the draw by repetition.
3.  Schlecter needed to win the match by two points, and therefore needed to win
the game.  This was a common requirement for challengers in those days.
There is also a question about whether the match was an official world
championship match, or rather just an exhibition intended to create interest and
attract sponsors for the real thing.
I wish I knew.
