I used to disable (or just not configure) proxy servers in the internet settings
in Win98, but now in Win ME it looks like there is no proxy setting anymore. I
think this was in the dialogue box where the IP numbers of the provider's DNS
servers are set too, but there is no proxy input line now (in the registry data
neither, as it seems).

So I'm afraid I have no influence anymore, on the provider's handling of this.

Your right, proxies are no improvement at all for the end user. When I
occasionally tried them in Win98, I didn't even notice a considerable speed up
(probably nobody else among this IPS's customers was surfing the same chess
pages...). It's a pain. I think they are just for hiding perfomance problems the
ISP might have.
