Terry,
My 733MHz PIII (Win98 SE) Chessmaster 8000 consitently reports in the
2870's. I think that some computer users have cleaned and tuned Windowz and
their system far more than others have. For example, following a fresh boot, if
I Ctrl+Alt+Del, I see three items reported. Explorer, Systray, and Em_exec.
Em_exec is a Logitech mouse stub which I use. I consider anything more to waste
CPU cycles. Of course everybody/system has their own needs and settings.
Now this tuning and pruning I speak of is not for everyone. Even covering the
major details is a bit much to type, for this forum, IMO. I do know that many
popular computers as factory delivered have a lot of extra crap running. A
simple tuning might involve running msconfig, but I can't help on what's
required to run or not for your computer. Needless to say, things can get
screwed up if you blindly check/uncheck items.
Another nice tool for checking CPU usage is TaskInfo. Those that are
interested should be able to find it with a web-search. After a fresh boot I can
see 98% idle, which I think is ok. Regards, Brian K.
