A keen observation made by a friend of mine(postal Gm) Chessmaster seems to like to prevent the opponent from developing piecing, somehow it does this tactically every game by improving its own position. I recently ran a match between chessmaster8000 vs gandalf4.32h. I wont go into great details but in this 10 game match, Gandalf was crushed badly. Games were played on a athlon 1ghz, running both engines in chessmaster inteface. The time controls for the match was SD/90. Also Chessmaster performs much much better in my opinion if you use Mentor opening book. Robert :)
