Hi Ed: As far as you asked an advice and I am a veteran purcharser, tester and lover of chess programs, I dare to give you one, not very different to that by Mr. Irazoqui: just do the effort to prepare a good learning device AND continue getting better engines at the same time. ANY other solutions is not a solution. Once an armament race has begun, nothing can be done but to follow suit. And there is not cheat as much, as Irazoqui pointed very weell, all programs will d do the same, so high ratings as 2900 will not happens. The relation of forces will be once again stablished by the different engines and not for the sames learning devices. Remember Elo is a relative measure, so once equality has been reached on the ground of any kind of devices, for the same reason theses devices will disappear as a factor of strenght and this one will be measured again by the real thing, the engine. Else: I wonder how much this discusion is irrealistic as much as the only chess consumers that are familiar with SSDF ratings are "professional" consumers that knows very well what Elo means, what killer books are, what learning gets, etc. The rest, mas market consumers, does not even know about the existence of Rebel 9 or Fritz 5 or in any case they purchase them, if they do, on the ground of the colours of the box, the words of the vendor or just they pick it up without many questions; they are just purchasing a "chess thing" for the kid. Waiting windows rebel version, Fernando.
