It seems to avoid all the obvious problems with auto232 testing. An added benefit is that the pool of players is quite large, including strong IMs and GMs. Several strong programs currently play on ICC, operated by the authors: WchessX, ZarkovX, crafty, ferret, and others. With Rebel, Hiarcs, Fritz, Junior, Shredder, etc.. also on line, there would be fantastic opportunity to test the relative strengths without any opportunities for excuses. (The only downside is the possibility of unequal hardware, but presumably the professionals could afford to have fast hardware.) One thing the programmers would want to avoid, however, is releasing the automated ICS interfaces publicly. This could create quite a problem with dozens of automated Fritzs and Rebels on the servers. My amateur program, EXchess, currently plays on FICS, and I think it is a great way to test changes and have fun. I've thought about paying for an ICC account but haven't had the motivation to do so yet. - Dan --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dan Homan dch@vlbi.astro.brandeis.edu Physics Department dch@quasar.astro.brandeis.edu Brandeis University homan@binah.cc.brandeis.edu --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.astro.brandeis.edu/BRAG/people/dch.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------
