Hmm.. close.  The chess server is an intermediate between two players,
be they humans, programs, whatever.  You'll get much more exposure
on a chess server, as hundreds of players are on at any one time.
I doubt too many people will go to some guy's web page to play
chess when they can log onto a server and do the same thing.

The interface is the link between the chess program and the chess server.
The opponent is logged into the chess server (just like the chess program).

Java would work.  If you're not hung up on a web based interface, you
could use xboard or winboard (like most of us do).
