Hi

If you use Windows 95/98/Me, you should install the system monitor.
Go to the control panel > software >windows setup.
Click on the System Tools ( I think, I have a Dutch version) and select the
system monitor.

Now install it and seach it in Start > Accessories > System Utilities (?
translation) and click it.

It will show processor usage. You don't need that.
Open the second pull down menu (between "file" and "tools") and choose " add
item" Now click on "external adapter" and choose both "byte sent" and "byte
received".

The best way is to choose the numerical view or the graph, not the bar.

Caveat: as I have a Dutch version of windows, take care in translating a bit
yourself.

Remember: a 56K modem means a download speed of say 4-5K max (modem speed/10,
as with every 8 bits data package there are 2 additional control bits, so ten at
a time. In this calculation 1 byte = actually 10 bits !).
However while downloading graphics can be compressed, so that downloading
actually goes quicker.

If you're not afraid of experiments, you could try to enlarge the
DefaultRcvWindow value in your registry. It makes packages you receive bigger
before a control package is sent.
Take care with fiddling with the registry, however. Visit http://www.regedit.com
for some nice tweaks.

And be careful with download managers. Some are notorious for their spyware.

Good luck.

Jeroen ;-}
