The main articles are in ICCA_J and its renamed continuation, ICGA_J:
Ken Thompson described his programs in two paper, one mid-80s, one mid-90s
the first is a good, compact, description of the retro-method
it works for Distance-to-Conversion (metric) tables
the second explains why some apparently good tricks don't work!
EN/CW/GH described both Nalimov's and Wirth's programs to a degree
"KQQKQQ and the Kasparov-World Game", ICCA J v22.4 (1999)
EN/GH/EH described Nalimov's index-scheme in more detail
"Space-efficient indexing ....", ICGA J v23.3 (2000)
Also, Rob Hyatt's anonymous ftp site has both Nalimov's tables and the code to
generate them.
