The contact with H+G was already established, but after the tournament I
was offered much better conditions. Not that I cared because I would have
taken any offer as long I could spend my full time on the chess engine.
Actually the latter was a demand by H+G and I had to decide to give up my
good job which wasn't an easy decision. But in the end I took the challenge
and obeyed my computer chess genes.

Correct! I somewhere have a picture of that. The machine was an APPLE 2E
running at 1 (!!) Mhz that was upgraded by a technician to 8-10 Mhz. This
was of course asking for trouble. My guess was that because of the 400-600
visitors some extra heat was produced and that was just the limit for the
processor to handle.

Those were the days that many people came over to watch this new phenomenon.
I remember 1981 the first ducth championship, 1500 vistors, television, all
major news papers reported.

Compare this with the world championship in London 2000. Just 3 (!!) visitors
who came a few days later and stayed for a few days. Their names:

- Ossi Weiner
- Frederic Friedel
- Richard Lang

Why oh why...
