Steven, I apologize for being a little bit agressive in my previous
post. It's just that I wanted to be a little provocative to get a
reaction.
I would like to make it clear that I love CCC, and I respect the job you
are doing.
I don't know if the problem is really bandwith or the time needed to
search for the messages. But if your problem is bandwidth:
I understand that you have to save as much bandwidth as you can, but
giving by default only partial information is not the right way to do
it.
Consider the following cases:
1) the average guy reading CCC without noticing the 12 hours problem
2) the experienced guy who knows about the 12 hours problem, and cliks
on "filter" everytime he connects to CCC
3) the experienced guy who has already changed his URL to get 24 or 30
hours by default
Currently, you are wasting bandwidth because of guy number 2. This guy
requests more than twice the amount of bandwith needed to download the
message list (he downloads the default message list, then the filter
page, then another message list). I believe at least 70% of CCC users
fall in the #2 category.
You can check this by counting the number of request to the filter page,
and compare it to the number of accesses to the default message page.
So by changing the default filter, my bet is that you are going to SAVE
bandwidth. Because nothing will change for guy #3, and the extra amount
requested by guy #1 will be less than the amount saved by the #2
category.
The logical default filter should be between 26 and 30 hours, in my
opinion.
24 hours doesnt make sense. I suppose most of the users connect once a
day. If I connect today at 8AM, I would like not to loose any message if
I connect tomorrow at 11AM.
So my vote is: 30 hours.
If you want to save more bandwidth, maybe you could try to improve the
message list (I don't know if you can modify it). For example, don't
repeat identical message subjects in the same thread. Instead of the
message subject text (which is usually long), put "Same subject" or
something even shorter. Or just "Re:". Put the actual subject only if it
has been changed from the previous linked messages in the thread.
I believe this simple trick would cut by 2 the size of the message list
page.
All these suggestions just because I would like to see an even better
CCC.
