Maybe your opponent was running Linux with about 300 Mhz and beat your Fritz in
a short match . This happens all the time even when you run your Fritz at 1000
Mhz as the difference in strength between these two programs isn't _that_ big
after all .

But this has nothing to do with the operating system you use . It's even the
other way around : if you use Crafty on a usual PC and use the binaries you can
download at the Crafty Website you'll get a faster engine under the Windows OS
than anything you can build yourself under Linux.

Please don't misunderstand me : I really like Linux and it's a great OS but it
really is no good idea to change to it if all you care about is chess .

Setting up Linux is not easy so far ( although many Linux users try to tell a
different story ) ; a good idea might be to look at the beginner Linux
newsgroups and read a little about the problems you might have to face.
