I purchased Power Chess 98 about a month ago. All of the bugs that I know of in the earlier version are fixed. I can export pgn, the system doesn't lock up, etc. Since I bought it, I have been trying to "crack the king." I'm not there yet, but I am very close. Instructionally, it is a unique learning experience. I doubted the value of learning an opening that is not in my repertoire. IM Minev has some interesting ideas on this in the February issue of Inside Chess. I have learned a great deal about the Giuoco Piano and improved my tactics (& confidence) tremendously. One problem with me using computer chess programs is my reliance on taking back moves. This program has helped me break that dependancy. The king was too difficult for me in the previous version and this one is much better able to adapt to my play. I wish that the program would move ahead in its analysis of my games to the point where I deviated from that line in my previous game instead of telling me, for example, that 1. e4 is a good move for 50 games. This is a much improved version. The instructional value of this program has been underrated. I doubt if a reviewer will be able to do justice to his/her review of the program without attempting to "crack the king" for 50 to 100 games. Tim
