The original post is too long to edit, so I didn't quote it, but it seems to me that all the answers to it have ignored the most important point, that there is an offer for DM 3,000 to write a universal, non-proprietary, autoplayer. This is badly needed, as improvements on the original are not forthcoming, and with source code provided, a Gnu-like project could develop that would get us an autoplayer for networks, with error-checking, and chess server access. Once such a thing existed, I think it would be a very bad idea for any chess program not to incorporate it, as people will want to use it if they don't have to pay DM 149 for it, as for the current one. (I think that's what I paid, anyway.) It might actually generate sales, as people will want to buy two or more favorite games to have them play each other. The features should allow for switching colors after X games automatically, where X is decided by the tester, and if zero, no switch is made. Error checking on transmittal of moves, with handshaking. Easy starting from positions that have been previously set-up, including , if possible, only setting up the white-playing computer, and using a command that automatically sets up the other, and then makes the first move. This would facilitate doing tests like Dirk's Play the Game. ( I think that is what it was called. I could never get my autoplayer to start from the setup position, although I know it is because I wasn't doing something right.) Play over TCP/IP, and chess server basic access would be nice, but a lot harder. Anybody else have any suggestions? kp
