John,

You bring up some questions that are hard to answer. I will give my opinion
and you should know I have no insider knowledge. When appropriate I will
paraphrase from the Chessmaster 8000 manual. Material/Position: helps determine
whether the program favors material piece points on the board or positional
aspects. Players factor both to make a decision, with 0 representing a balance
of both. You might find a little better play either to the right or left of
zero, who knows.

I interpret Selectivity as the programs ability to focus on what it thinks are
the meaningful lines and to disregard the junk. However, there could be
something overlooked in the 'junk'. 6 is the default, deemed best by the engine
author. I think values over 10 or 12 are probably not of much use. Again a
subjective settings, others will disagree.

As for the profile you are trying to make up. Hey, give it your best shot,
experiment some. Maybe start with Material/Position setting of 25 and Selective
Search of 10? B.K.
