Jim, A couple comments on programs and sound cards. I don't know if it will be of any use to you, but maybe, or to someone else. When you say edited Cm.ini I take it that you are referring to this quote from the Chessmaster 8000 faq: To help determine if there is a problem with your sound card's settings, the v1.0.1 patch for Chessmaster 8000 adds support for a special CM.INI debugging setting. If you want to test whether or not your sound card's settings are preventing Chessmaster from initializing, add the following to your CM.INI file (found in the folder where you installed Chessmaster 8000): [debug] NoAudio=1 Also some users have found setting DirectX sound acceleration to Basic or No acceleration to be beneficial. You can do this by launching: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DXDIAG.EXE and then click the sound tab to see and set this option. This is helping some HP owners with Riptide/Conexant sound and modem combo cards and helps some programs other than Chessmaster run. Regards, Brian K.
