First of all, you should know that, OFFICIALLY, Chessmaster 8000 does not
support Windows 2000 or NT. The installation program attempts to install DirectX
7.0a, which cannot be installed on Win2K/NT. BUT, you can get around this by
going to www.microsoft.com/directx and downloading the latest version of DirectX
(which is 8.0). So, uninstall the program, download and install DirectX 8.0,
then install Chessmaster 8000 and run the patch.

HOWEVER, the problem you are having with sound is probably completely unrelated
to the DirectX problem and is most likely a sound card issue. Does your computer
have a sound card? Chessmaster 8000 requires some kind of sound-playing device.
If it DOES have a sound card, then you need to make sure that there are no
programs that are running that can "take control" of the sound card, such as
Windows Media Player, WinAmp, RealPlayer, etc. Also, there might be some
software that came with your sound card that is running in the background that
you do not know about. You should check for any of these kinds of programs.

Additionally, you should check the settings for your sound card's drivers. There
might be some non-default settings there that you may need to play with.

Furthermore, some users have reported that changing the DirectX hardware audio
acceleration settings to "Basic" or "None" has fixed problems with several
games, including Chessmaster. You can do this by running the System Information
program, then going to "Tools -> DirectX Diagnostic Tool", going to the "Sound"
tab, and changing the slider setting that says "Hardware Sound Acceleration
Level".

Phew.... I hope that helps!
