I cannot reproduce this error. Let's go through the steps.

You unintentionally saved a game in CMG format. Try loading that game. Then,
press CTRL+S to bring up the save dialog. There will be a default name in the
"File Name" section, and "Chessmaster Games (*.CMG)" will be selected in the
"Save as Type" section. Change the text in the "File Name" section to the file
name that you want, but DON'T add the ".PGN" extension at the end; just put
something like "Me vs. Chessmaster". Now, change the "Save as Type" selection to
be "PGN Game Files (*.PGN)" and press the "Save" button. That should save the
game as a PGN file.
