I think you are being rather conclusive about the number of people who are aware of the SSDF ratings list. Now it may be true that not everyone who is aware of the SSDFs existance anxiously awaits the release of new rating lists, and they are some who wait til the end of the year and then combine the previously released list. Most of the world's top players are using some type of software for analysis, and they are aware of the list. Take Kasparov, who has publicly admitted that he uses Fritz to analyse, or Shirov, whom has told me personally at ICC that he too uses several different programs to prepare for tournaments. They or someone in their camps have been alerted to the SSDFs existence, you can be assured. My first introduction to the group came in the late 1980's, when I recieved a free copy of the Computer Chess Reports with an order from ICC. At the time, there were very few strong DOS programs, and Bill Gates was still a middle class schmuck, so there were no win. programs. Most of the ratings were for Mephisto, Novag, or Fidelity products, and at that time none of them played above 2200 ELO. Now, ten years later we still have the SSDF list as a "guide" to whats available on the market. True, lately it has posted some results which are open to debate, but whithout a fair number of interested parties, the SSDF would have ceased long ago.
